Roof and Access Area Refurbishment with Reinforced Bitumen and Liquid Waterproofing Systems - with Bauder

CASE STUDY

Client: Network Rail
Project Type: Refurbishment
Location: Leeds Train Station, Leeds, West Yorkshire
Roofing Contractor: D&D Roofing Ltd
Completion Date: March 2025
Roof and Walkway Area: 300 m2

Leeds Train Station, a vital hub in the UK’s rail network, required extensive refurbishment of key building elements to maintain structural integrity, passenger safety, and operational reliability. This included the complete renewal of a flat roof over a service area, as well as refurbishment of exposed concrete stairs and pedestrian walkways used by staff and contractors.

All work was conducted while coordinating closely with Network Rail to ensure zero disruption to rail operations and strict adherence to safety protocols.

Challenge

The existing bituminous roof had reached the end of its service life, with signs of water ingress and surface degradation. The existing concrete substrate needed to be stripped back and verified for moisture levels prior to re-application.

In addition to the roof, external stairs and walkways showed signs of cracking and surface wear. These high-footfall areas required a non-slip, fully waterproof finish to ensure safety and prevent water ingress into the underlying structure.

All works had to be carried out safely in a live transport environment, under Network Rail’s health, safety, and access control measures.

Solution

Two specialist Bauder systems were specified for this project:

  • The Bauder Total Roof System, an uninsulated self-adhered bituminous membrane build-up for the flat roof.
  • The Bauder LiquiTEC System, including LiquiBALKON, for the refurbishment of stairs and walkways, providing slip resistance, fast-curing application, and full waterproof protection.

Roofing System Specification

Structural Deck:

  • Existing concrete deck, stripped and prepared.

System Build-Up:

  • BauderTEC KSA DUO Underlayer – A self-adhered/torch-on hybrid underlayer for secure adhesion to the concrete substrate.
  • Bauder K5K Capping Sheet – UV-stable, torch-applied reinforced bitumen membrane offering long-term waterproofing and durability.

Testing & Preparation:

  • Moisture Readings: All deck areas were tested and confirmed to be below 20% moisture content prior to application.
  • Adhesion Testing: Conducted in multiple zones to validate membrane performance over cleaned concrete.

Stairs and Walkways Waterproofing Specification

Upgraded stair and ramp access at Leeds Train Station with Bauder LiquiTEC anti-slip waterproofing system installed by D&D Roofing Ltd

Substrate:

  • Existing exposed concrete stairs and access walkways.

System Build-Up:

  • Bauder LiquiBALKON – Resin-based waterproofing system specifically developed for balconies, stairs, and walkways.
  • Bauder LiquiPAVE FR – A fast-curing, flexible, fire-retardant base layer providing full coverage and durability.
  • Bauder LiquiFINISH – Anti-slip, UV-resistant topcoat, ensuring safe foot traffic and a clean finish.

Application Benefits:

  • Cold-Applied & Odourless – Safe for use in occupied, public environments.
  • Non-Slip Surface – Critical for stair safety and compliance with access regulations.
  • Durable & Easy to Maintain – Long-term protection in high-use zones.

Results

  • Complete Roof Renewal: Robust, long-lasting waterproofing system installed with Bauder’s 20-year guarantee.
  • Full Moisture & Adhesion Validation: Thorough QA processes ensured a stable, dry substrate for effective membrane bonding.
  • Enhanced Access Safety: Walkways and stairs finished with a slip-resistant, seamless surface ideal for wet conditions.
  •  Seamless Coordination: Project delivered on time (March 2025), with full cooperation with Network Rail’s safety and operational teams.
  • Long-Term Performance: Both systems are backed by Bauder’s technical support and warranties for future maintenance planning.

Conclusion

The refurbishment works at Leeds Train Station demonstrate how combining reinforced bitumen membranes with liquid-applied waterproofing systems provides a comprehensive, long-lasting solution for both flat roofs and access areas. The project was executed with precision, safety, and collaboration with Network Rail, ensuring the continued protection and function of critical infrastructure.
