Background

IKEA Leeds is one of the region’s flagship retail destinations, located at the busy Junction 27 Retail Park just outside Leeds city centre. The store serves thousands of customers every week and is a key part of the local retail economy.

As part of its ongoing investment in sustainability and customer experience, IKEA added a new entrance structure designed to improve access and visual appeal while aligning with its environmental goals. D&D Roofing Ltd were selected to deliver the full roofing package for this new-build extension, ensuring a high-quality, durable, and sustainable green roof solution.

Scope of Works

  • Full installation of the new entrance flat roof build-up.
  • Protan G single-ply membrane system, with certified root resistance for green roof use.
  • Integration of the Urbanscape Lightweight Sedum Blanket green roof system.
  • Works delivered safely and on schedule while the IKEA store remained fully operational throughout.

Installation Details

Roof Structure

  • New-build entrance canopy constructed with an 18 mm structural timber deck, designed to support the green roof system’s load.

Waterproofing System

  • Protan G 1.8 mm thick root-resistant PVC single-ply membrane.
  • Fully EN 13948 certified for root resistance, making it ideal for green roof applications.
  • Mechanically fixed through the timber deck using Protan-approved fasteners and stress plates.
  • All seams and details hot-air welded to create a continuous, durable waterproof layer.
  • Installation inspected and approved at critical stages by Protan’s technical representative.
  • Completed with full electronic integrity testing to confirm there were no breaches or defects.
  • Result: a 20-year Protan system warranty issued, demonstrating the quality and compliance of the work.

Green Roof Build-up

  • Protection fleece layer installed over the Protan membrane to prevent mechanical damage during green roof installation.
  • Urbanscape Drainage & Reservoir Layer fitted to deliver reliable drainage and water retention—critical for maintaining healthy sedum growth without overloading the timber structure.
  • Urbanscape Green Roll (Rock Mineral Wool substrate) laid across the roof, providing a lightweight growing medium with exceptional water retention capacity.
  • Urbanscape Pre-cultivated Sedum Blanket rolled out to deliver instant green coverage, improve biodiversity, and reduce stormwater runoff.
  • Total saturated weight ~55–70 kg/m²—ideal for lightweight timber construction.

Site Management & Live Store Considerations

  • All works carefully planned and coordinated to avoid disrupting IKEA’s trading operations.
  • Access, deliveries, and lifting operations managed safely and with minimal impact on customer flow.
  • Installation teams worked to strict health and safety protocols, including pedestrian management and close communication with store management.
  • Careful housekeeping ensured that the customer experience at one of the busiest retail sites in Leeds remained unaffected during the works.
