Protan green roof system at The EV Hub

combining thermal performance, biodiversity, and sustainable design in the heart of Manchester.

CASE STUDY

Client: The EV Hub
System Installed: Protan Green Roof System (Warm Roof Construction)
Location: Reliance Street, Manchester, M40 3AG
Roofing Contractor: D&D Roofing Ltd
Completion Date: May 2025
Roof and Walkway Area: 92 m2

The EV Hub is a forward-thinking development located in Manchester’s green technology corridor. As part of its commitment to sustainability and innovation, the project required a durable and environmentally responsible roofing solution. We were appointed to deliver a warm flat roof system incorporating a wildflower-seeded living roof to promote biodiversity, manage rainwater runoff, and enhance thermal performance.

Roof Build-Up Details

The warm roof build-up was meticulously designed and installed to ensure longevity, performance, and compliance with current building regulations. The system included the following components:

  • Deck: 18mm OSB Board
A robust and stable substrate to support the roof structure and overlying layers.
  • Vapour Control Layer (VCL): Protan PE
A high-performance polyethylene membrane to prevent interstitial condensation within the build-up.
  • Insulation: 160mm PIR
High-performance rigid polyurethane insulation provided excellent thermal resistance, significantly improving energy efficiency in line with Part L requirements.
  • Waterproofing & Protection Layer: Protan F300M
A heavy-duty, mechanically fixed membrane offering outstanding durability and UV resistance, suitable for use beneath green roof systems.
  • Green Roof System: Wildflower-Seeded Living Roof A pre-seeded, extensive green roof installed to enhance biodiversity, regulate temperature, reduce urban heat island effect, and provide a visually appealing natural finish.

Challenges & Solutions

1. Site Access & Logistics:

Located in an urban area, careful coordination was required for the delivery and storage of materials. We implemented a phased delivery schedule to reduce site congestion.

2. Weather Considerations:

As with any roofing project in Manchester, unpredictable weather presented a challenge. Our team used weather monitoring tools to plan installation windows effectively, ensuring the VCL and insulation layers were installed in dry conditions.

3. Living Roof Integration:

Installing a wildflower-seeded roof system required precision in layering and drainage management. We coordinated closely with the green roofing supplier to ensure optimal growing conditions and long-term performance.

Outcomes & Benefits

  • Thermal Efficiency: The 160mm PIR insulation significantly reduced heat loss, contributing to lower energy bills and enhanced comfort within the building.
  • Sustainability: The green roof not only improves air quality and supports biodiversity but also aligns with the broader environmental objectives of The EV Hub.
  • Aesthetic & Functional Value: The wildflower living roof offers a visually appealing finish while helping with stormwater management and noise reduction.
  • Compliance: The system meets and exceeds current UK Building Regulations for thermal performance and sustainability.

Conclusion

This 92m² green roof installation at The EV Hub exemplifies the fusion of performance and sustainability in modern construction. The use of Protan’s high-quality roofing products combined with a carefully engineered warm roof design has delivered a reliable, energy-efficient, and environmentally conscious solution.
