Project Title: Castle Hall Academy – Mirfield, West Yorkshire
Client: Owner
Location: United Kingdom
During the summer holidays of 2024, our team proudly completed a full roof replacement on one of the most architecturally distinctive buildings at Castle Hall Academy in Mirfield. Given the unique geometric form of the roof — a striking multi-faceted polygon — this was a project we were particularly excited to undertake, and the finished result truly did not disappoint.
Working throughout the school summer break allowed us to conduct the works safely and efficiently while avoiding disruption to pupils, staff, and academy operations. Keeping children and staff safe on site at all times was a priority, and the holiday period provided the ideal window with minimal foot traffic and full access to elevations.
Castle Hall Academy is a well-known secondary school serving the thriving community of Mirfield, located in West Yorkshire, not far from Huddersfield and Dewsbury. Mirfield itself blends idyllic Pennine countryside with a rich industrial heritage, and is home to the renowned College of the Resurrection and beautiful historic architecture.
The academy plays a central role in the town’s educational landscape, educating hundreds of young people and hosting community events. Given its importance to local families and staff, any maintenance works must be carefully planned, communicated, and delivered with minimal disruption — a challenge this project met successfully.
The building in question is notable for its distinctive roof geometry — a polygonal, almost radial shape that posed both aesthetic and technical challenges. The existing roof was weathered, and the original felt covering needed replacement for improved performance, longevity, and modern U-value standards.
Its unusual form meant precise planning and detailing were essential. Standard flat roof systems require adaptation when applied to non-linear rooflines, and achieving a neat, watertight finish on intersecting planes demanded high levels of skill and coordination on site.
Our team approached this job with careful attention to detail, delivering a comprehensive roof upgrade using best-in-class materials and installation techniques:
The use of the existing felt as a vapour control layer was a particularly effective strategy, streamlining the build-up and improving thermal efficiency without unnecessary removal work.
The roof’s unusual geometric shape — almost like a segmented pavilion or a modern architectural feature — means sight lines and junctions had to be considered carefully. The final result highlights:
This project not only addressed functional needs but also respected the architectural expression of the building. The finished roof enhances the building’s visual identity, giving it a fresh, modern look.
The academy were informed at every stage with clear communication and safe site protocols. Completion before term start meant classrooms and circulation areas were quiet and undisturbed.
We are thrilled with the outcome — both technically and aesthetically. This roof was a particularly rewarding challenge for our team, combining craftsmanship, careful planning, and excellent execution. It stands as a strong example of our ability to deliver bespoke roofing solutions on complex and high-profile sites.
This Castle Hall Academy roof project exemplifies what we do best:
